Girls basketball teams across the Clarksville and middle Tennessee area are back in action tonight. Some teams are looking to continue their hot starts to the new calendar year, while others may be trying to build momentum towards the post season as district play picks up. Here are the games we will be covering:
Clarksville Academy vs. Goodpasture
Two teams sitting atop district 4A girl’s basketball meet for what is almost certainly to be one of the most intriguing games to this point in the season. The Clarksville Academy Lady Cougars host the Goodpasture Lady Cougars in a battle of the last two teams undefeated in district play.
Led by senior Sydneey Boykin (16.6 points per game) and junior Diamond Bryant (11.9 points per game), Clarksville Academy enters tonight’s game with a perfect record; 16-0 (6-0 in District 4A). Clarksville Academy is not only bringing an explosive offense into tonight’s matchup, averaging nearly 58 points per game, but also one of the most suffocating defenses in the district. The Lady Cougars are only allowing 35 points by opponents this season, and 31 points by opponents in district games. A key part of this defense is junior Makayla Artis, who leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game.
Goodpasture also sports a prolific offensive duo. The Goodpasture Lady Cougars are led by seniors Ally Welfel and Taryn Kile. Welfel will be leaned upon heavily at both ends of the court as she not only leads the team in offensive production (15.1 points per game) but also in rebounds (7.1 per game) and steals (2.1 per game). If she draws extra attention, that should open up the floor for Kile, who is second on the team, averaging 13.6 points per game.
Clarksville High vs Northeast
Two teams fighting to get to the top of District 10AAA square off tonight as the Clarksville High School Wildcats host the Northeast Lady Eagles. The Wildcats are hoping to improve their district record as they sit at an overall record of 5-8 (3-3 in District 10AAA). The Lady Eagles are carrying a record of 9-6 (5-2 in District 10AAA).
We last saw the Lady Eagles of Northeast on Tuesday night in the second game on back-to-back nights. They emerged with a dominant victory over the West Creek Coyotes. Northeast hopes that they can continue getting production out of sophomore Cierra Bowser, who went 9-11 (18 pts) from the floor.
Clarksville High School will be playing their first game after the holiday season tournaments. Tonight’s game marks the start of a grueling eight-game stretch against district opponents. After some early-season struggles with consistency, the Wildcats are sitting in the middle of the District 10AAA standings, and will be looking to start the second half of their season with a signature win over a talented Northeast squad.
West Creek vs. Kenwood
The West Creek Lady Coyotes are hosting the Kenwood Lady Knights in a matchup of two teams who are hoping to find much more success in the second half of the 2019-2020 schedule. The Lady Coyotes enter the game with a record of 1-12 (0-6 District 10AAA), while the Lady Knights are 1-11 (1-5 District 10AAA). The Lady Coyotes are coming off of a disappointing 54-15 loss to the high-powered Northeast Lady Eagles on Tuesday night. Tonight’s game may provide them an opportunity against another struggling team with a win, thus building momentum as they move in to the heart of district play.
The Lady Knights are in a very similar situation; near the bottom of the District 10AAA standings without much separation between the bottom four teams. The Lady Knights will be trying to gain some separation from West Creek and Montgomery Central, who is the lone win on the Lady Knights record, with a victory tonight. However this game turns out, it could play a crucial part in post-season seeding in February.
Cheatham County vs. Harpeth
The Cheatham County Lady Cubs are hosting the Harpeth Indians in a crucial District 9AA matchup. The Lady Cubs enter the game in third place sporting a 10-4 (2-2 in District 9AA) record, while the Indians are looking to find their first district win with a record of 2-8 (0-1 in District 9AA).
As they head in to the meat of the district schedule, Cheatham County will be looking to gather momentum as they look to make another deep post season run following their 2019 Division 1AA state championship. After a bit of a rocky 2-2 start to the season, the Lady Cubs seemed to have found their stride, winning six consecutive game (including holiday tournament play) and most recently, a dominant 65-45 win over district rival Greenbrier on Tuesday.
Harpeth enters tonight’s game with only two wins on the season and looking for their first district win. With only 11 games remaining, including tonight’s, the Indians will only play one non-district opponent, when they visit Fairview on January 30. This leaves little room for error in a very competitive district, and Harpeth will look to start this brutal stretch of games with a win over a high-octane Cheatham County squad.
