Soccer Player of the Week Finalists, week ending August 30, 2019
Carleigh Minnis, Harpeth High School: Big week for the sophomore forward who registered a total of 9 goals and 4 assists over the last week including two hat tricks (3 goals) against Perry Central (KY) and Heritage High in the Smoky Mountain Cup, which her team won. Harpeth sits at 5-0-1 overall and 2-0 in district play. “She’s an asset to our offense!” her coach Alex Galistel said.
Harper Dee, Cheatham County Central High School: The sophomore forward had two goals and two assists as her Lady Cubs defeated . “Harper is very calm under pressure, and never loses her cool. She is a great center-mid and continues to grow every game,” her coach Susie Kephart said.
Shannon Villa, Rossview High School: The Lady Hawks freshman is described by her coach Connie Castleman as “a versatile player who is technical and quick. She contributed three goals in our win against WCHS and one more in our victory against Clarksville Academy. This girl is super talented and I can’t wait to watch her grow as a player in the years to come!”
“you are doing it very well“
At least the stats were close…not. 9 goals to 4 plus 4 assists.
Keep your eye on the prize!!
Go Shannon!!🙌⚽️
So happy for you Shannon !
(You go Shannon!!)
Good luck Shannon! You are such a talented player!
Why is this even being voted on? It’s clear who the best of the best was.
To the person making the ignorant comments about stats and captain obvious,
I’ve coached for more decades. I have had the pleasure of coaching all spectrums of talent. I’ve coached Kids that have gone to play at higher levels.
To Captain Obvious,
You fail to look beyond and true spirit of why these girls were nominated by their coaches. Stats by themselves are not a true measure. Have you seen Bayern Munich beating C level team by ten goals or Man City beating a tiny country during Champions League by double digit goals? Do you think Pep takes these stats as the gospel. Of course not, he is looking at all aspects of the game and player character as any great coach would.
The fact that these three girls were nominated for player of the week is all the accolades they need. Each girl doesn’t dedicate themselves to a sport for a vote. They dedicate themselves to compete, be a leader and inspire others. I guarantee that these girls were nominated by their respective coaches for other reasons, the stats are a byproduct of what you don’t see. These girls are the first to practice, work the hardest, keep order during practice when the team lacks concentration and tap a teammate on the back when they fail and tell them you will get it next time. Here another important part of this process, I can assure these student – athletes are excellent students first and foremost. They understand the role or representing something bigger than themselves.
Resist the temptation to reply with something negative. Your irrational and myopic viewpoint is not worth the time or a debate and this veteran coach
Instead of adding to the hateful culture that we live in today, try spreading a simple note of congratulations to each girl for being recognized for being a leader. Congratulations for Carleigh, Shannon and Harper. I don’t you and the fact that I live hundreds of miles away is a guarantee that I won’t see you on a pitch any time soon. However, I do know it would be an honor to coach any player that is recognized by their coaches.
Way to stay positive everyone and hopefully the magazine will reconsider this process and avoid the hateful comments and voting process like it’s done in my part of the world. The coaches nominate and an election committee of coaches vote with the approval of the magazine.
Soccer is Passion! Well done ladies!
